It's been a while since this space had any real action, but I'm starting to get the itch to use it again. I've had a busy several months so I'll start by recapping some recent projects.
Recent Design Projects
Mounting the Whale
I just completed the cover for "Mounting the Whale" by Colleen McCarty. It's due out December 5th, and I'll be posting pics as soon as I get the final copy in my hands.
This was a fun project and I had a great time working with Colleen. She was very open to ideas, and the final version was actually a surprise to me. The process can really take you in crazy directions. My initial ideas were pulling from pop art and pulp comics, but we ended up on something that felt classic and really minimal. The take-away? OBEY THE PROCESS.
Find out more about it on her website.
Graphic the Valley
This past summer I completed my first cover for a nationally released novel. "Graphic the Valley" by Peter Brown Hoffmeister is an epic story of biblical proportions, about an American Indian kid living in the Yosemite Valley struggling with his own identity and heritage in the face of American tourism and encroaching development in the national park. Highly recommended. It's out on Tyrus Books/F+W Media and available everywhere.
Design Process Interview on Wolflit.com
Not long after I completed Hoffmeister's book cover, I had the privilege of doing a website for his New York City-based literary agent, Wolflit.com. They've started posting some really great blog content geared toward helping writers process and professional practice. They interviewed me on my book cover design process for "Graphic the Valley".
