One Day You Wake Up and Everything Changes
As of September 1st, I left my job of 6 years at Copic Marker, USA / Imagination International, Inc. Things had run their course, restructuring was happening, and ultimately I wasn't able to do design or manage a creative team on my terms.
Up until the summer of 2013 it had been a great place to work, and I learned so much from my time there. I don't regret it at all. I began as the lone staff designer, and worked my way into a Creative Director position with a programmer and two designers working for me by the time I left.
The biggest asset of that job, was the wide range of web projects I was able to develop and manage while I was there. I learned about building websites, managing social media, developing digital strategy as well as the finer details one has to know, to manage programmers and front end developers (php, ruby on rails, python?).
The New Thing
The best thing about all this is that my friend, colleague and talented programmer Paul Fernandez (who left the department right after I did) and I have formed a web studio called ArtsDigital.co. To start, our focus is on Wordpress and Woo commerce development, as these have been the main tools of our trade. We also have a handful of internal projects we will be working on, and hope to release one or two of them in 2014.
In the meantime I'm still doing "old school" graphic design as I always have. I will be phasing out the Punch identity I've worked under for many years, in favor of a streamlined web presence under my own name. This will allow me to use this web space in a more personal way, as I plan on doing more personal work (both design related and painting and drawing) and featuring it here.
I've recently added a shop page to this site, and I'm using Gumroad as a way to handle single product transactions. I've got a sizable inventory of paintings, drawings and other objects I've made over the years, and have always wanted to be able to get them out into the world.
