Project Excelsior III

The highest recorded skydive to date was made on my birthday (August 16th) in 1960 by Colonel (then Captain) Joseph Kittinger of the United States Air Force. He reached 102,800 feet above the earth before stepping out of his gondola, freefalling at a speed of 614 mph before a parachute landing in the New Mexico Desert.
